Internship frustration - Anonymous

Nothing can probably be more frustrating than applying for an internship. Especially when you have no ‘references’ and of course the most wanted: an ‘N-school’ tag. A hundred mails to a hundred firms, with the most impeccable language and crossed checked another hundred times, because the slightest mistake could take away your best opportunity. So the mail is ready and sent out. Next step is make a hundred calls to pursue the application. Get thrashed by few; get a few positive responses by some (who will eventually turn you down); a few refuse to respond and most of them take the easier way out: out rightly reject you without even glancing at your resume (which by the way, takes a helluva of time to make one).

I wonder how this whole legal system even works with so much internal biases and prejudices. I can never understand how a rational or the so called reasonable man thinks that a normal university student cannot match the standards of an N-school student. No offence but, I doubt if even 50% those students even have a level of standard that is widely spoken about. There is a cream of bright students everywhere and if it’s the name of the University that gives him/her a better edge over the normal university students I don’t see how far that is a fair practice. What is funny is that people who care so much about an N-school tag are themselves a normal university pass out who have reached a certain level with no reference (sadly!). What is funnier is that we all succumb to such a system and obviously we don’t have much of a choice, do we?

Exactly! Students have a lot more to contribute than the mere contacts they have and the place where they study. This is what I call hipocrisy! We give importance to all the wrong things and wrong people.

Well the Tag and the bias prevails in the market today for a reason, while frustration is natural its also time we did something to break the market bias by working along with each other( agreed the task is extremely difficult) but we need to bring about a change in our attitudes, work really hard for at least this one last year, forget our personal differences, and help each other out to excel in whichever way possible so that our batch shines bright at the end of it all.

16 / 320 students attended today's Guest Lecture by Former Infosys Legal Head. Surely we can break the bias like this.

Exactly! All topics that are chosen doesn't interest a large crowd. Now, if not for individual interest we need to show people outside that we care! Or who'll look back at a SLCU!

Apparently there are 80 (eighty) general body members of the Corporate Law Group, of which only 8 (eight) turned up today.

keep the committees out of this! if its called internship frustration then we are talking at an individual level.

someone once said that life is unfair and the more we grow up ,more it comes true.

but will that excuse stay with us all over lives!

no ........

if will smith did not give up in pursuit of happiness, we are at much safer and better level , we really cant crib .....

and do not come up with an excuse that it was just a movie!

so SLCU keep trying , cos there is something 'worth' out there.

What some people fail to realise is that everything is inter-connected. Ultimately, when we sit for placement we don't sit at an individual end, we sit as a batch! So it does matter how many people turn up for these lectures coz it shows the level of interest as a batch!

And we definietely can't bring in movie theories here! There is story-writer there and has an open field to play with his characters. We are law school just to remind a few!

I understand that there is need to work together as a batch and bring out a brighter picture of the batch as a whole. Accepted. I agree that a turn out of less then 20 students for a lecture by such a reputed person is embarrsing. But i think someone needs to understand why the turn out was so low...lets look at some possible reasons... whether justifiable or not is another question..

1) The number of guest lecture that are held. Face it no one has time for too many lectures. Its 4th year everyone wants moots, conferance, essays, paper presentation, other courses like CS, CA, MBL and not to forget our own course which we as of nw r clueless abt..and practical work...
When i priortise i dont c y i should attend a lecture on a subject which does not interest me when i have so much work that interest me

Even if it interest me if have to meet up deadlines of all the above which i could include in my CV

Or I'm running on schedule with the rest which leaves me no time to do the reading for the lecture and therefore i dont want 2 attend it and make it more embarsing for both the speaker and myself.

Or it could be sheer disinterest which makes my presence there a pain for the others.

All these are excuse which i dont say are justifiable but in fact play a role. Consider all lecture that have been conducted so far the number of students fall with the frequency of the lectures... The first lecture of the season always have the highest turnout ever wondered y? People want 2 attend lecture but cant devote too much time for the same....

So what i'm suggesting here is not to restrict the number of people that we can bring to college for lectures... but rather to make them more effective.

And for that what we should try is to organise conferances.... organise 1 gud confernace every month where u cud call for 3 or 4 speakers and circulate the material...i bet the turnout will definetly be better..

I know it not an esay task the logistics are complicated...money, getting all speakers together, rooms, etc etc... but nevertheless its not impossible for us... we can that where we need to work together... and that what is gonna be more impressive to the speaker as well because there is better scope for interaction then...

No offence to anyone this is just a humble suggestion... And i repeat i'm not justifing it just making a few worable suggestions..

I feel that regarding internships its been really tough for our college internship committee to give good internships because the missing " N-Tag " with us.
There are two types of students one with CONTACTS to get good internships and one with NO CONTACTS. The ones who are not having any contacts are the ones who suffer the most because despite the fact that they are good still because to the missing " N-Tag " they are not getting good internships which is very very important in order to have a good placement.. So i feel that something needs to be done for those students otherwise they wont have a good CV and will face a hell lot of problem in getting placements.

admit that wherever you are u will b judgd by your work and not by ur alma mater.

and stop cribbing about so many things. collective action and emotionally arousing speeched are a matter of the movies. face the real life, some have it hard, some easy.. but thokare kha kha kar jeena padega. don't blame anyone and live along. aur zindagi ka jashn manao.

start working your asses off. i say this to all 4th years, 3rd years, 2nd years and 1st years.

You are all sitting on ur rear ends and waiting for this to happen and not making them happen. now u get it?

stop relying on faculty or fathers. start taking responsibility for your individual lives, which most of you are doing. this college is not going to do anything for us (they ask for bribes from recruiting companies, cos they believe their students are gold and they are a diamond like college, when it is clearly overstating its own achievements and has a false ego) that apart. it's nothing less than any government college without anyone. trust me, resign to the fact that we are all going to go down if we rely on our pappas.

and stop falling at NLS's feet. be original n stand on ur own feet for crying out loud.

faculty is bearable (not all), fees in humungous, only library is good, administrative ppl r discriminatory.. and there is no improvement for a long time to come.

individual affirmative action is the answer. go do it.

I agree with the second last post to mine. It's important to act individually but it's also essential to stand together as a batch. There has been enough of indifference in the last four years! It's time we get our act together and put things into place!

I think some optimism and support will HELP!

Anonymous said...

don't think so. everyone's exuding optimism here. who has done what?

Anonymous said...

So why don't you make a difference and start the optimism. Why be barbaric and fickle and follow the others? This whole thing is to bring about people together and vent out our frustrations. Lets help each other.

i've already vented my frustration to a point which indicates my inclination to having given up. and may be nothing is going to change that.

So, work on ur group inspiration project while I watch and pitch in some comments once a while. and I promise I will be on the lookout for more opportunities to make my point of view obvious. All the best you all. I hope and wish that you all come together, group up and change your destiny. march on.

I will, from now onwards, post my comments as "marched on" for identification.

I agree. But, some things have come to my notice which are really worth condemning. Guys, in this race please don't try to cheat i.e using official positions to find yourselves internships. I am quite sure many of us commenting here would feel the pain of the pricking conscious, and if you don't.. :)
